Can a UV lamp be used to sterilize toys?

Parents know that microorganisms, bacteria, mold, and other pathogens can harm their children, which is why bottles and nipples need to be sterilized.

You can buy special devices for these items or use proven methods such as boiling. However, not everyone knows what to do with toys, as not all of them can be treated in the usual ways. In this case, a UV lamp (germicidal irradiator) can help. Let's take a look at whether such a device can be used to sterilize children's items.

How do UV lamps work?

A bactericidal lamp is an electrical device that is used to destroy bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms by emitting ultraviolet light.

The disinfection process occurs at the molecular level: when ultraviolet radiation hits a microorganism, its DNA absorbs the UV waves, is destroyed or damaged, and the bacterium dies. It is important to understand that ultraviolet lamps destroy microorganisms only when they come into direct contact with the radiation.

The best type of UV radiation for sterilization is type C with a wavelength of 200-280 nanometers, especially around 254 nm. It is at this wavelength that the DNA of microorganisms most actively absorbs ultraviolet energy.

There are different types of UV lamps depending on their design and application:

  1. Open type. These lamps emit UV rays directly into the air. They are only used when there are no people or animals in the room, as ultraviolet radiation is harmful to the skin and eyes.
  2. Closed type (recirculators). In these devices, the UV lamp is hidden inside, and air passes through it. The lamps are safe for people, so they can be used even when someone is in the room.
  3. Ozone lamps. Some germicidal lamps produce ozone, which further disinfects the air and surfaces. However, after using such lamps, it is necessary to ventilate the room, as ozone is harmful in large quantities.

All germicidal lamps destroy germs, but they differ in how they can be used and whether they are safe for people during operation.

How can you safely disinfect a child's room?

Several methods are suitable for safely disinfecting a child's room:

  1. Use germicidal recirculators. These are enclosed devices, so the radiation does not enter the room. However, it is important to buy only certified models and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Ventilate the room. This simple action helps reduce the number of germs and refresh the air.
  3. Do wet cleaning. Wipe the floor, furniture, and toys with clean water or safe disinfectants.

Another good and safe option is to use air purifiers with HEPA filters. Their effectiveness is proven by scientific research, represented in a research article, that is issued on the website maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). They are completely safe for children, operate silently, and effectively remove dust and allergens from the air. You can keep this type of purifier on even when your child is sleeping or playing in the room. However, it is important to understand that filters are not very effective against bacteria and viruses.

For best results, use a combination approach: ventilate the room daily, wet clean, and use a UV recirculator for a few hours a day if necessary. However, remember that an overly sterile environment can also be harmful, as your child's immune system needs to develop.

How to disinfect toys, accessories, and children's clothing?

Want to use a UV lamp to disinfect children's toys, accessories, books, or clothing? It is possible, but there are a few rules to keep in mind:

  1. If you plan to treat toys regularly, choose a closed UV chamber (sterilizer). It is safe for home use and suitable for disinfecting small items. You can also choose a recirculating irradiator with louvers, which is harmless to health.
  2. UV rays can damage some types of plastic, rubber, or fabric. It is worth checking whether the items are suitable for UV treatment. The instructions may contain the labels UV Resistant, UV Sterilizable, or UV Safe, but this is not always the case. It is usually safe to treat items made of hard plastic, silicone, glass, and metal with a lamp. If you are unsure, conduct a short test (expose the item for 1–2 minutes) and observe any changes in color, structure, or odor. If there are no changes, you can proceed with treatment.
  3. Ultraviolet light only disinfects exposed areas — the back surface or folds remain untreated.
  4. Before UV treatment, the toy must be washed and dried, as UV rays do not penetrate dirt or grease and do not work well on damp surfaces.

It is not recommended to use the lamp to treat soft fabrics, rubber products, and electronic devices. Clothing and textiles are best washed or steam cleaned, as the radiation does not penetrate fabric fibers well.

The UV treatment process itself is as follows:

  1. Place the toys or dishes in a special sterilizer and turn on the timer.
  2. If you are using a stationary lamp, you can place the items on foil, which reflects the rays. If you are disinfecting several items, place them at a distance from each other. The lamp should shine directly on the toys, books, or dishes.
  3. The treatment time depends on the power of the UV sterilizer — usually from 5 to 20 minutes. Check the instructions for details.
  4. It is worth turning all items over after a while, as ultraviolet light only works on one side.

Since UV cleaning is safe, toys can be given to children immediately.

A UV sterilizer is effective for disinfecting various children's items, but it does not replace regular washing, cleaning, or laundering with children's products.
