The BactoSfera BS series of replaceable ultraviolet germicidal lamps are a source of ultraviolet radiation with germicidal action (UV-C spectrum with a peak wavelength of 254 nm).
The radiation from these replaceable bactericidal lamps kills (inactivates) viruses, bacteria, mould, fungi, yeasts, spores, allergens and other microorganisms, including all types of influenza viruses (influenza A, B, C), viruses causing acute respiratory infections and acute respiratory viral infections, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (2019-nCoV) that causes COVID-19, and the ‘Omicron’ strain of coronavirus. The dose of ultraviolet radiation absorbed by DNA and RNA molecules leads to the destruction of microorganisms.
Intended for use in bactericidal irradiators, air recirculators, quartz tubes, disinfection cabinets, ventilation systems, water purification systems, etc.
Applications:
- Air disinfection.
- Surface disinfection.
- Water disinfection.
- Sterilisation of medical instruments and everyday items.
- To prevent microbial contamination of foodstuffs, containers and refrigeration equipment.
Spare UV lamps must be operated at an ambient temperature of between 10 and 50 °C.
Safety precautions:
- Replacement germicidal lamps contain mercury (Hg) in a gaseous or liquid state. If a replacement UV lamp breaks, wear rubber gloves and carefully collect all large pieces of the lamp and sweep up any small shards. Wash the area where the lamp broke with a 1% potassium permanganate solution. Ventilate the room thoroughly.
- A person may remain in the room for a short time whilst a replaceable germicidal lamp is switched on, provided they are wearing eye protection against ultraviolet radiation (e.g. UV-protective goggles). Exposure to a germicidal lamp without protective equipment may cause painful burns to any part of the body (the skin of the face, hands, the mucous membranes of the eyes, or the cornea).
- Consumers should dispose of spare germicidal bulbs that have failed or been broken at collection points for mercury-containing fluorescent lamps.
- When a replaceable ozone germicidal lamp is in operation, it emits ozone (O₃), which, in high concentrations, is toxic to the human body and can cause serious damage to the respiratory system. Ozone has a distinctive odour. After prolonged use of an ozone-emitting UV lamp, it is recommended to ventilate the room. There is no need to ventilate the room after using ozone-free germicidal lamps.
* The service life of a replaceable germicidal lamp depends on the quality of the ballast and the number of on/off cycles.

How to choose a replacement germicidal lamp for your home
There is now a huge range of different replacement quartz bulbs available. To buy the one that’s right for your situation, you need to understand how they differ from one another.
The main difference lies in the type of action:
- ozone-generating — when in operation, this type of replaceable disinfectant bulb promotes the formation of ozone;
- ozone-free germicidal bulb — this is an antibacterial UV bulb that does not produce ozone whilst in operation.
It is important to remember that ozone is toxic to humans and animals, so the room must be thoroughly ventilated after treatment.
In terms of design, devices fitted with replaceable bulbs come in open and closed types. Open-type irradiators disinfect both the air and surfaces in the treated rooms. Closed-type units, or recirculators, sterilise only the air passing through them. Recirculators can be used in the presence of people.
They are classified by installation method as follows:
- fixed — can be mounted on the floor, wall or ceiling;
- portable — ideal for home use, as a single unit can treat the entire home by moving it from one room to another.
We offer versatile models that can be installed either as fixed units or mounted on a portable stand.
Medical germicidal lamps
Replaceable antibacterial lamps for use in hospitals and clinics must strictly comply with the safety and efficacy requirements applicable to medical equipment. This is due to the need to prevent the spread of nosocomial infections and to neutralise the activity of pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi.
Depending on the purpose of the room within the healthcare facility, open irradiators, closed recirculators and combined devices may be used. Sanitisation using open irradiators and combined irradiator-recirculators must be carried out according to a strict schedule when no staff or patients are present.
Some people mistakenly refer to an antibacterial device as a bactericidal lamp. This term is incorrect. After all, the word ‘bactericidal’ means ‘capable of killing microbes’. The prefix ‘anti’ is used to express the opposite.
Antibacterial lamps for offices and public spaces
Public spaces require particular attention to ensure infection control. However, as it is quite difficult to ventilate such premises thoroughly after each irradiation cycle, and to provide all visitors with protective goggles, it is recommended to install recirculators fitted with replaceable, ozone-free bactericidal bulbs.
To make it easier for you to find and order a UV lamp with the required specifications, the BactoSfera website features filters for power, lamp lifespan, current and voltage, base and bulb types, dimensions and price.
Advantages of replaceable UV germicidal bulbs
Lamps for disinfecting premises have proven their effectiveness. Numerous studies show that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light destroys up to 99.9% of pathogenic micro-organisms: viruses, bacteria, fungi, spores and other micro-organisms.
Compared with ozone and other disinfection methods, UV germicidal bulbs offer a number of advantages:
- safety — an ozone-free antibacterial bulb does not generate ozone whilst in operation, so there is no need to ventilate the room after using the device;
- environmental friendliness — bactericidal replacement bulbs leave no residues of harmful substances after use, unlike some other methods of chemical disinfection, and therefore do not pollute the environment;
- wide range of applications — bactericidal bulbs are used in medicine, agriculture and the food industry, for disinfecting premises of all kinds, including residential ones, as well as for disinfecting drinking water, process water and waste water.
Another undeniable advantage of bactericidal bulbs is that they can be replaced as soon as their service life has expired. Replacing these bulbs is very easy: simply remove the old one from the lamp holder and fit a new one.
