The BactoSfera BS series of replaceable ultraviolet germicidal lamps are a source of ultraviolet radiation with germicidal action (UV-C spectrum with a peak wavelength of 254 nm).

Safety precautions:

1. Replacement germicidal lamps contain mercury (Hg) in a gaseous or liquid state. If a replacement UV lamp breaks, wear rubber gloves and carefully collect all large pieces of the lamp and sweep up any small shards. Wash the area where the lamp broke with a 1% potassium permanganate solution. Ventilate the room thoroughly.
2. A person may remain in the room for a short time whilst a replaceable germicidal lamp is switched on, provided they are wearing eye protection against ultraviolet radiation (e.g. UV-protective goggles). Exposure to a germicidal lamp without protective equipment may cause painful burns to any part of the body (the skin of the face, hands, the mucous membranes of the eyes, or the cornea).
3. Consumers should dispose of spare germicidal bulbs that have failed or been broken at collection points for mercury-containing fluorescent lamps.
4. When a replaceable ozone germicidal lamp is in operation, it emits ozone (O₃), which, in high concentrations, is toxic to the human body and can cause serious damage to the respiratory system. Ozone has a distinctive odour. After prolonged use of an ozone-emitting UV lamp, it is recommended to ventilate the room. There is no need to ventilate the room after using ozone-free germicidal lamps.
