Ultraviolet lamps are used to disinfect water, air and various surfaces. They are the basis of bactericidal recirculators and other devices. However, ultraviolet lamps are not eternal tools. Even if the lamp is still glowing, it does not mean that it is working effectively. Over time, UV radiation weakens and the lamp loses its disinfecting power, although you may not notice it. That is why regular replacement of UV lamps is a necessity. We will tell you what signs to look out for.
Common signs of UV lamp wear
The following are the main signs that a UV lamp is wearing out:
- The lamp is dimmer than before. This is a sign that the power is dropping and the intensity of the ultraviolet light is no longer normal.
- An unpleasant odour appears during operation. A strong smell of ozone or ‘burning’ may mean that the lamp is not working properly or that its intensity has decreased.
- The lamp starts to flicker or turns on slowly. These signs often indicate wear and tear of both the lamp itself and the starter. However, most often the problem is with the lamp.
- Darkening or blackening at the edges of the bulb. Black or yellowish spots near the base indicate that the lamp will soon become unusable.
- The lamp hums during operation. This indicates that the electrodes inside the bulb are gradually deteriorating.
Do not forget about the service life specified by the manufacturer. UV lamps are usually designed for 8,000–10,000 hours of operation. Even if everything looks normal on the outside, after this time the efficiency of the radiation drops by 30–50%. So if you don't remember when you last changed the lamp, this is a reason to think about replacing it.
How to replace a UV lamp?
Replacing an ultraviolet lamp is a simple process, but there are a few important rules to follow:
- Always unplug the equipment before starting work. This is a basic rule that many people forget for some reason. Allow the lamp to cool for 10-15 minutes if it has just been in use to avoid burns.
- Before removing the old lamp, check the markings: model, power, base type. You will need this information to buy the right replacement. Do not experiment with analogues — UV lamps have specific technical characteristics, and incompatibility can damage all the equipment.
- To remove the lamp, turn it counterclockwise (if it has a standard base) or open the retaining clips if the design is different. Hold the lamp by the base, not the glass bulb — it is fragile and may crack under the pressure of your fingers. Do not throw the old lamp in the regular trash — take it to a special collection point.
- Install the new lamp with gloves on, as grease marks from your hands reduce the effectiveness of ultraviolet light. Insert the lamp into the socket, turn it clockwise until it clicks, and check that it is securely fastened. Turn on the equipment and make sure that the lamp lights up evenly, without flickering.
Don't forget to write down the date of replacement — this way you will know exactly when it's time for the next update. Some modern devices have an operating hours counter, but if yours doesn't, a regular sticker with the date on the case will also work.
